Here’s the thing: 75% of users never scroll past the first page of Google.
So when someone types “family lawyer Sydney” or “commercial lease lawyer Melbourne” into the search bar, the question you should be asking isn’t if Google Ads is worth the investment. The real question is, “Is my firm showing up when people are looking for a commercial lawyer in Melbourne?”.
If not, chances are your competitors are. And they’re probably using Google Ads to get there.
We often get asked by law firms, “Is Google Ads worth it?” And the honest answer is a resounding… well, it depends. It can absolutely work, but only if it’s done with the right strategy, budget, and expectations.
At a basic level, Google Ads works by allowing you to bid on search terms your ideal clients are typing into Google. If your bid wins (and your ad is well written), your website shows up at the top of the search results with the little “Ad” icon next to it.
You only pay when someone clicks on your ad, which is why it’s called pay-per-click (PPC). These clicks take users to a landing page on your site, ideally built to convert them into a lead.
Your ad spend is determined by how competitive the keywords are that your firm is trying to rank for.
Legal keywords tend to be some of the most expensive in Australia, with some practice areas (like personal injury) costing upwards of $30 per click.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the numbers:
If your average client matter brings in $3,000 in fees, then 4 new clients = $12,000 revenue on a $2,000 ad spend. That’s a 6x return*.
Not bad if you ask me. But only if your campaigns are converting and your landing pages are doing their job.
*This is a rough ROAS calculation and estimate. Every campaign is different and outcomes are determined by various factors of each campaign.
Yes, but not in the way most firms expect.
One of the biggest mistakes we see is assuming that turning on Google Ads will mean leads start flowing in the next day.
In reality, it can take weeks (sometimes months) to properly test keywords, refine landing pages, and improve ad performance.
In our experience managing digital marketing for lawyers, Google Ads works best for practice areas where clients are searching for immediate help.
Think conveyancing, criminal law, business contracts, or wills and estates. These are “I need help now” types of searches, and Google Ads puts you in front of those potential clients when it matters.
But if your practice area is more long-term or advisory-focused (like succession planning or corporate structuring), other channels like SEO for law firms or content marketing might provide better long-term ROI.
There’s no magic number, but here’s a starting point for small to mid-sized law firms:
If you’re spending less than $1,000 a month, you likely won’t generate enough data to know what’s working, or you’ll burn through your budget on expensive clicks without enough return.
Google Ads is not a set-and-forget channel. It needs constant optimisation, testing, and tweaking to make the most of your budget.
If your firm is prepared to invest in the right strategy, ad creative, landing pages, and campaign management, then yes, it can be worth it.
But for Google Ads to deliver a positive ROI, you need the full ecosystem working together:
compelling ads, optimised landing pages, good follow-up processes, and a realistic understanding of how long it takes to see results.
And if you’re not sure where to start or feel like you’re wasting money on underperforming campaigns, that’s where Practice + Pixels comes in.
